Earlier this year, full-figured Christina Hendricks graced the cover of New York Magazine, and the Vancouver Sun commented about her “dangerous curves” saying:

“The recently married Hendricks is quietly becoming the guilty pleasure of males—and females—across North America, and the reason why is simple; she’s real.”

We’ve seen her for three seasons as Joan Holloway, the signature pen-necklace wearing, hot office manager for Sterling Cooper Advertising Agency on New York’s Madison Avenue. She’s not only hot on the show but off, with people buzzing about her, and her figure, all over the media.

Mad Men is set in the 1960s, peak of the fun retro era—the era of pop art, false lashes, Jackie Kennedy, pastel colors and the death of Marilyn Monroe, whom Joan compares herself to. Like the other characters, Joan Holloway has a fashion-perfect 1960s wardrobe and the show’s costume designer consistently nails it!

I always know when Mad Men season is approaching because that’s when our 1960s inspired pen necklace sells like crazy! If you recall, back in 2008, we had our very own Joan Holloway contest on who could imitate the character best donning our pen necklace, and the winner from New York got it down pretty well. (See for yourself by clicking on the bolded link.)

We’re excited for the new season! And be on the lookout for our compilation of Joan Holloway-inspired jewelry coming soon!

Mad Men Season 4 premiers on Sunday, July 25, 10/9c.

Cabochon Jewelry!

July 15th, 2010 comments: 0

What’s that smooth, non-faceted stone that has a ladybug-like surface? A cabochon, of course! The term cabochon (ka-boshon) comes from the French term “caboche” which means “head.” So that’s where they get it from–a head of lettuce = a cabbage!

A French ornament, the cabochon was used to embellish furniture in the 18th century and made its way into jewelry.  (I would’ve seen that coming!) Anything older than 50 years is usually considered antique, so any jewelry with  cabochons has an influence of “antique,” which is a style we carry a lot of.

I love the smooth surface that a cabochon delivers. (And I love how the word smoothly rolls off my tongue!) The back of the cut stone is usually flat or hollowed out and encased and made into pendants or embedded on bracelets and other accessories like hair barrettes and rings. Take a look at some of our amazing selections that feature beautiful cabochon stones:

Cabochon Jewelry Pendant Necklace

Sonora Floral Charm Pendant Necklace

A unique find, this Sonora Pendant Necklace features a turquoise blue cabochon pendant that is reminiscent of the Caribbean islands.

Vintage Pearl Crystal Brooch

Vintage Pearl Austrian Crystal Brooch

An absolute favorite, this refreshing brooch features ivory glass pearls and clear Austrian crystals delicately set in a fancy gold toned swirl design. The center of the brooch features a smokey rose quartz oval cabochon. Looks perfect on a white blazer or brown blouse.

Estate Black Cabochon Necklace

Elegant and modern with an antique edge, the Estate Black Cabochon Necklace can be worn with a casual or dressy outfit. Take your pick!

Twilight Inspired Jewelry

June 23rd, 2010 comments: 0

Helloooo readers! Any Twilight fans out there? Italy just had their Eclipse premiere last Thursday in Rome (how romantic!). Taylor Lautner signed autographs for drooling female fans to promote the movie. If you aren’t in the know,  The Twilight Saga: Eclipse will be released JUNE 30, which means SEVEN more days!

Before Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight book series came out, vampire novels/stories were still in vogue. It was considered “chick-lit.”  But why all this fascination with vampires? Writers do a good job romanticizing them.  Girls AND women just love their mysterious factor and portrayal as sexy, sophisticated and romantic beings.

With also the HBO True Blood series coming out (new season began June 13), 1928 teamed up with the show during Season 2. You can see which jewelry was featured in True Blood on our Twilight New Moon Costume Jewelry post!  This trend has totally not lost flavor yet. A few days from now, we’ll be releasing our new Black Angel collection that is SO Twilight appropriate! (Check back on 1928.com for updates.) Here’s a preview of two of our tempting jewelry pieces about to be released: Update: The new collection is now ALL available here for you to swoon over:)

Victorian Era Fashion

Victorian Jewelry

Photo: Flickr.com/G-dzilla

The Victorian Fashion Era was all about the skinny waist, big hips and puffed shoulder sleeves. Fashion style leaned very conservative–the older a girl became, the lower the dress hemline had to be. For women, long, sweeping hourglass corset gowns came down to the floor (I have no idea how they managed to keep cool on hot summer days!), bonnets and embellished hats were in style, and Queen Victoria must’ve donned her cameo jewelry well since it was she who brought back the cameo trend during her reign from 1837 to 1901.

What exactly is cameo, you ask? Figures that have been carved into stones or seashells, typically of the prototype woman or Greek goddesses. Cameos were fashioned as early as the 15th/16th century (see TheCameoCollection.com). In the Victorian fashion era, cameo styles were more popular as pins and pendants, commonly worn on a black velvet ribbon or satin ribbons.

Jen’s Journal – Feeling Blue, Avatar Blue

April 28th, 2010 comments: 0

Oh my dear readers – over 4MM Avatar DVD’s have been sold since the 4/23 release.  That’s a lot of blue!  Which, of course, I must translate to blue 1928 pieces – what fun!

Avatar IMDB

"Avatar" photo courtesy of IMDB.com

For earrings, if I were a Navi I’d choose either the 1928 Mademoiselle Blue Flower earrings (most likely for day flying around Pandora) and the Starlight Tears Blue Hues for evening flying – the tiny crystal accents are just enough to catch that starlight and make my blue face SHINE!

For a necklace I’d choose either the 1928 Boutique Aquamarine & Peridot Green Flowers Necklace which would definitely make my yellow eyes POP!  Or to fit in with the lush countryside of Pandora I could wear the 1928 Midnight Blues Butterfly necklace.41579Jens Journal Feeling Blue, Avatar Blue

I probably wouldn’t do anything on my wrist but I could so pull of with style the 1928 Turquoise Art Deco silver Ring or the 2028 Oversized Silver & Cerulean Blue Filigree Ring.  And of course, I would absolutely rock the 2028 Exotic Dragonfly Ring!  THAT goes without saying!Exotic Dragonfly Ring

Still purchasing, purchasing, purchasing for all the Mothers in my life – 1928 has an amazing selection of jewelry for whatever style your Mom rocks!  Am also thinking of the upcoming grads I need to shop for; have one friend graduating Law School, another getting her MRS!  Get it?!

Yes, I have a Bridal Shower to attend this weekend.  It’s a Beach theme in Southern California – what else?!  The happy couple is getting married in Malibu and doing beach colors for everything – DIVINE!

I think I’ll wear the 1928 Antiquities Couture Antique Pearl & Crystal Flower Studs with the 1928 Pearl & Crystal Beads Stretch Bracelet – oooh – this one’s on sale – LOVE!

Enjoy the rest of the week dolls and rock your 1928 jewelry with whatever you do this weekend!

Ciao for now!

Jen’s Journal: Mother’s Day!

April 20th, 2010 comments: 1

Hi Dolls!

Back from a splendid weekend in Vegas; think I even saw Katie Perry! She’s a cutie – that one!

Have you seen the new exclusive MLB collection from PINK at Vickie’s Secret? Of course I couldn’t even look if they didn’t have Yankees but – why even ask – they DO! The cutest little fan gear. They have a tee I must own that says “I only kiss Yankee fans!” So true! And the little MVP Yoga Pants are to die!

While I was gone 1928 had a faboo Mother’s Day sale where you could purchase one of their beautiful crystal frames and you automatically get a pair of matching crystal studs free! How bananas is that?! I have to be quick like a bunny and jump on there to purchase several for my out of town Mommies! It ends tomorrow! Wonder what they’ll be promoting next? Sign up dolls so you can enjoy all the 1928 bennies too! ;)

I think I’m purchasing the 1928 Antiquities Couture Vintage Couture 44” Gold Deco Necklace for my mom and the Art Deco Revival Eternity Brooch for my grandmother for Mother’s Day – they will love!

Vintage Couture 44" Gold Deco Necklace

What are you all doing this weekend? I’m off to a family member’s 80th birthday! Can you imagine what she has seen in her lifetime? The formula changes in Coca-Cola ALONE! LOL! Speaking of which – Are you Coke or Pepsi fans? I am a die-hard Diet Coke girl and when I’m out and ask very nicely ask for a Diet Coke and am asked (somewhat not-so-nicely back) “Is Pepsi ok?” As my face falls, I want to ask (as my FB friend so aptly put) “Is Monopoly money ok?!” Sigh.

I digress, as I’m prone to do. Mother’s Day is coming next month, so many birthdays, a bridal shower, Memorial Day – oooh yeah – off to the shore…

Ciao for now dolls!

The twilight saga: new moon

Hi Dolls!  I know you’re going to kill me but I am so not a TwiHard.  I know, I know.  Just not in to pasty faces or cold weather!  Howevs – did you see the “New Moon” DVD sold 4 million copies over the weekend – wow how you LOVE that movie! ;)

And of course 1928 has some appropriately named jewelry for all you fans: the “Bella Rouge Ruby Red Bowtie Necklace” or the beautiful Siam Red Hematite Tone Drop Earrings that are on sale for just $6.00!!!!! You can’t beat that!  WOW – I seem to be on a blood red theme here!  ;)   Of course you MUST get a couple of the Rojo Hematite Siam Square Filigree Stretch Bracelets and the Blaze Gothic Filigree Bracelets – GORGEOUS!

What did everyone do over the weekend (besides purchase THAT DVD!)?  I went to a bridal shower and everyone commented on my pin which (of course!) is from 1928 – their Boutique Brand.  It’s the Vintage Inspired Goth Brooch.  Are you aware, dear readers, that 1928 Jewelry has several different brands?  There’s our beloved, and original, 1928; 2028 – an exclusive collection sold only in Macy’s stores; 1928 Boutique, 1928 Bridal; Antiquities Couture (my personal fave – I have several pieces!) and The Vatican Collection – hand selected pieces from the Vatican Library – can you imagine?!  Simply exquisite.

1928 Blaze Gothic Filigree Style Bracelet

Make sure you hop – quick like a bunny – (enough Easter phrases for you?!) and check out all the brands for yourself, you’ll fall in love for the first time, or perhaps you’ll see a brand that’s been here your whole life just waiting for you to rediscover, and maybe explore a whole new you!

 Ciao for now girls!

Jen’s Journal: 1928 and InStyle Magazine

Oh my Godfather – Gwennie’s on the cover of the April InStyle and 1928 is inside!  To die!

instyle out 150x150Jens Journal: 1928 and InStyle Magazine

I LOVE!  Annnnnnnd – the Queen of Vintage has a spread – that’s right Rachel “I dream in Jewelry” (who doesn’t?!) Zoe has a fab four pages.  I am sighing and drooling as I write.  The most amazing thing – you can hop on www.1928.com and STEAL so many look-a-likes from this very article!

Let’s see – there’s the long pearl/Trinity gold cross looking pendant she’s wearing on pg. 138, 1928’s version would be the Antique Black Bow-Tie Necklace, or her diamond and pearl flower ring – the 1928 Antique Pearl and Crystal Flower Stud Earrings are PERFECT and all you crafty types could just pop over to Michael’s and make a ring for yourself and one of your friends in no time!  Viola!

The GINORMOUS hoops Rachel’s rockin’ are certainly a rather large take-off of the 1928 Luxembourg Embellished Olive Green Hoop Earrings!  Can you say Happy St. Patty’s Day to your ears?!

2028 Jewelry Featured in "trend n tips" in the April 2010 InStyle

Now, thumb through to pg. 317 to the “tipsntrends.com” page – middle right – yes dear friends – those two rings are 2028, an exclusive collection available only at Macy’s!  Now, being the arachnophobe I am – I would never DREAM of wearing bugs on my fingers, howevs I simply die for this superfly Dragonfly!  And the locket ring reminds me of my beloved Nana Banana’s locket that she wore crossing the ocean from Wales to this country as a child.  Is it not GORGE?!  I’m running (in my pink Reebok Easytones!) to my local Macy’s.  And never fear ring lovers – if it’s not in stock yet, be patient.  You know how these pubs work.  They release weeks in advance – keep running back, it will be there soon and you will be so pleased that you persevered!

 Ciao for now!  ;)

Jen’s Journal

Hi gals – and how was everyone’s Oscar Sunday?!  Was the carpet not fabulous?!  So much to say, where to begin – how about with Zoe Saldana’s Boysenberry piñata dress?  She looked like a fancy feather duster!  Offset that bottom heavy hitter with the 1928 Morado Amor Flower necklace next time girl!

Gabourey Sidibe looked AMAZING, just one little thing missing; a 1928 Midnight Blues Fantasy Floral Necklace!  All JLO needed with her amazing dress was the 1928 Bridal Art Deco Revival Eternity Necklace!

43018 2Jen’s Journal

Blue and white/nude/blush were the popular color palettes of the evening.  Avatar Shmavatar!  Kathryn won – awesome – and how fab would the 1928 Art Deco Revival Eternity Brooch be on her little satin clutch?!  Magnifique!

Let’s talk about the guys.  Yawn.  George, I love you but you always look the same.  Taylor Lautner – not sure what you were even doing there but you have looked the same this entire Awards Season!  How about one of the 1928 Crimson Gardens Leafy Drop earrings tucked into the top of your bowtie?  Pinned to your pocket which was missing a pocket square…

As I journaled last week, my Griffy was the best dressed boy in his Fabulous Filigree Burnished Copper Tone Bracelet.  If only he could have strolled the red carpet, what a sight he would make!  “Papa – Paparazzi!”

I’m thrilled the big blue behemoth didn’t take Best Picture.  Too commercial, too stop-motion, acting my beloved audience is what earns you an Oscar.  Look at Mo’Nique, not the hair – the actor – now that was an Oscar-worthy performance!  However, in place of that garden growing out of her head – a nice 1928 Silver Tone Filigree Blue Butterfly Barrette would be a beautiful touch – just a thought.

Loved, loved, loved Steve and Alec - they looked handsome and were hilarious.  Just the right note to the looooooong evening (thank you Tom Hanks for abruptly ending the madness!) and don’t get me started on Doogie Houser opening the show.  He didn’t need anything!  Can you say “sequin explosion?!”  Someone owns a bedazzler!
