At JGB, we occasionally like to deter away from our vintage inspirations and venture into utlra mod. Especially when we find something as cool as RoadQuill.

Vancouver artist Amy Nugent offers roadkill jewelry. Nugent uses roadkill — bears, moose, turtles; if it ended up on the fender of a car, it’s fair game — to create stylish gear like porcupine quill bracelets and rabbit feet keychains. Nothing says fashion forward quite like a necklace made out of squirrel teeth.

Now that’s creative!

I noticed that a most fashion, jewelry and accessories designers only write about their products, their projects and what is happening in their business. They write about other designers when it comes to their inspirations (to a point) and their collaborations. And that’s not wrong, in fact it’s right. But remember the X-Files motto “Question Everything?” Well, we are doing that and trying something a bit different.

Since I delved into the the Twitterverse, I’ve noticed a trend that Macala (who’s long been in the ‘verse) pointed out. There aren’t many major brands present, at least in the way you would like. But what there is – is an abundance of skillful, amazing, talented independent fashion, jewelry and accessory designers. I’ve started watching them, checking out their sites and absolutely loved what I’ve found  (especially on Etsy.com).

Macala and I were sitting around (as we usally do) talking about what to write next, where to go. I threw out the idea – how about talking about our Twitter friends and their designs?

Macala was like “Yeah! And I know who to start with!”

How We Fell In Love with Maddie

In adding friends and followers to our Twitterverse, Macala stumbled upon Madeline Rhodes. Madeline is an amazing, independent neck wear, pin and jewelry designer who runs LoveMadds.com. Macala was Twittering about the Joan Holloway pen necklace contest when she connected with Maddie. We mailed Maddie the Pen Necklace as part of one of our giveaways. We loved her energy and personality so much that we felt she just had to have it.

Well, that was the start of a beautiful Twittership between 1928.com and LoveMadds.com.

The Story Continues…

About a week later, Macala recieved a package from Maddie in the mail. It contained Maddie’s Madita necklace. Macala almost fell out of her chair. She loved the piece.

She describes it as Boho Chic with a 1970′s throw back flair. She wore it for a week straight and even caught the attention of a few of our designers.

I absolutely love Maddie’s designs. They are urban, modern, with that retro flair that you need when looking for unique accessories.  Remember, sometimes an outfit is not made by the label designer or what it cost, it’s made by the JEWELRY.
