Earlier this year, full-figured Christina Hendricks graced the cover of New York Magazine, and the Vancouver Sun commented about her “dangerous curves” saying:
“The recently married Hendricks is quietly becoming the guilty pleasure of males—and females—across North America, and the reason why is simple; she’s real.”
We’ve seen her for three seasons as Joan Holloway, the signature pen-necklace wearing, hot office manager for Sterling Cooper Advertising Agency on New York’s Madison Avenue. She’s not only hot on the show but off, with people buzzing about her, and her figure, all over the media.
Mad Men is set in the 1960s, peak of the fun retro era—the era of pop art, false lashes, Jackie Kennedy, pastel colors and the death of Marilyn Monroe, whom Joan compares herself to. Like the other characters, Joan Holloway has a fashion-perfect 1960s wardrobe and the show’s costume designer consistently nails it!
I always know when Mad Men season is approaching because that’s when our 1960s inspired pen necklace sells like crazy! If you recall, back in 2008, we had our very own Joan Holloway contest on who could imitate the character best donning our pen necklace, and the winner from New York got it down pretty well. (See for yourself by clicking on the bolded link.)
We’re excited for the new season! And be on the lookout for our compilation of Joan Holloway-inspired jewelry coming soon!
Another Friday, another fab find! Did you ladies get the July W Magazine this month? Aside from the numerous pages of designer garb, the beautiful Eva Mendes is on the cover. She’s sporting a retro ’50s inspired look and pulled it off quite well, if I say so myself. Eva is a classic beauty who doesn’t require a ton of makeup, but for this photo shoot the makeup was very dramatic and she carried the look of a retro vixen. One thing I noticed was the use of minimal jewelry to style her outfit.
Usually these photo shoots have celebrities draped in jewelry. The only piece of jewelry Eva wore in the pictures was a pair of Harry Winston diamond and pearl earrings. We hear his name pop up on red carpets when celebrities are asked about their jaw-dropping diamond bracelets or earrings. When you fall in love with a 5-carat diamond piece, you better expect a 5-carat price! For those of us who can’t afford to spend thousands of dollars on jewelry, it’s not a practical option.
1928 Crystal Pearl Button Earrings
I love anything pearl, especially pearls used in earring form so I took it upon myself to find a more affordable piece that’s still stylish and chic like the Harry Winston piece. I settled on Her Majesties Crystal Pearl Button Earrings by 1928 and think they’re the perfect alternative. These button earrings are a breathtaking array of crystals and a faux pearl in a classic vintage earring set. The gold frame is adorned with tiny glass crystals that add shine. They also have the same ’50s flair that was used for Eva’s shoot. The earrings are both vintage and antique-inspired and will never go out of style. The perfect piece for every woman whether young or old.
Dear readers! Did you notice that we not only have earrings, bracelets and necklaces but also charming boutique accessories such as key fobs, purse hangers and hair barrettes? Here are a few pieces that I can’t resist:
She’s artistically wearing our fuchsia-toned Cabochon Barrette on her knitted beret. Who said you had to wear it directly on your hair? Each of the sparkling stones are hand set in an etched filigree hematite metal with a double-locking closure snap. Simply adorable.
Insert your favorite photo in these heart locket key fobs! Large and lightweight, (like the size of a pocket watch) they make a fashionable statement with your keys. Choose the Silver Heart Key Fob or the Copper Heart Key Fob–whichever strikes your fancy:)
Me and the other girls at 1928 ditched our black lanyards and traded it with one of our stylish badge holder necklaces like this hand-enameled gold-tone Butterfly Badge Holder Necklace!. Why choose plain when you don’t have to?!
Here is one of my favorite boutique accessories I think every girl should have! The purse holders are small and convenient enough to carry around in your bag so that you don’t have to leave your purse on the floor or on your lap at a restaurant or meeting.
Check out this vintage boutique jewelry piece with a modern twist. This magnifying glass necklace doesn’t have to be only for your grandmother, I tell you! Isn’t it adorable?
I think it’s time to reveal our most popular, 10 bestselling jewelry of the year since January! Wow… are we already halfway through 2010?
I don’t know about you, but I love snooping around in the streets, shops, cafes and restaurants to see who’s buying what and who’s wearing what. Sometimes I do a double take because an outfit is TOO outrageous or SO á la mode that I can’t stop staring! Do you get those moments? It’s these times that I hanker for an LA that’s more of a walking culture–fewer cars and more feet! But I’m digressing…
Our #1 bestselling jewelry is the 1960s Vintage Pen Necklace. If you recall, we ran a contest last year on who could wear the pen necklace best as Joan Holloway. We were a bit surprised to find it ranking first since the last episode ran back in November 2009. But with a pending new season, the buzz will not be over anytime soon! And we’re mad about it too! Be on the lookout for July 25: Mad Men Season 4. (By the way, for those of you who already own a pen necklace, we have refills for only a $1!)

It’s time to “summerize” our wardrobe, ladies! Summer officially starts on June 20th, which means the sweltering heat, plenty of Vitamin D and a good tan (and like always, it looks like we got a head start here in Los Angeles). I was looking through my closet the other day and was surprised to find plenty of olive green. When did I acquire all that? Beats me, since I’m still lovin’ the color!
Then I wondered, how could I make a fall color look more summer-friendly? What was I going to whip up? The answer? Rather than spending large bucks on new outfits, I decided to save $ like all you recessionistas out there and summerize my off-season clothes with popping accents of jewelry, which adds a whole new flavor to any old outfit!
Surprisingly, a lot of people have been asking me to recommend jewelry pieces that go with olive green. So to answer that question for everyone, here you are! But first we need to establish what colors go with olive green. Shhh…now here’s a little secret I’m going to let you in on: Color Scheme Designer. It’s my online go-to place when I need color advice. It’s a free, ingenious color wheel tool that let’s you choose up to six colors that complement each other. Olivine and other green-toned jewelry is an obvious choice for matching olive green apparel, but for more popping accents (a summer must!), luscious raspberry, blackberry purple, thirst-quenching lime and neon green look stunningly charming as matching jewelry pieces!
And yes! The garishly refined neon green is back from the 80s. Neons come on strong this summer, as reported by Style.com. So go ahead and layer your olive green tank over a neon green tank or the other way around, and voilà, you’ve got yourself a winning outfit!
If you’re not into bright jewelry (oh, but it’s a must!), then you can never go wrong with white and cream porcelain jewelry, or gold, bronze and silver jewelry. Black jewelry also goes wonderfully well with olive green garb, but you might want to save that for the fall and wear all the color you can wear–while you still can.☺
It’s Friday and that can only mean two things: The weekend and FAB FIND FRIDAY! I’m attending a friend’s birthday bash this week and I’m stoked! For me, parties are all about the 3 F’s: Friends, Food and Fashion! What could be better than catching up with old friends and enjoying good food and drinks (let’s hope)? Also, parties give us an excuse to get all glammed up like some of our favorite celebs. This week’s find is on celebrity inspired jewelry featuring a beautiful bracelet–designer jewelry without the huge price!
Bangle bracelets and cuffs are so in right now! It’s so easy to slip on a bracelet and completely revamp your look. They are tres chic and oh-so-easy to sport with any outfit. As fabulous as they are, I have one issue with bangles and cuffs and that has to do with size. Usually cuffs and bracelets are huge for my little wrist. Bangles are supposed to hang loosely on your wrist, not slip down to your knuckles and hang on for dear life. If you’re like me, someone with tiny wrists or someone who doesn’t necessarily enjoy a big bulky bracelet, you’re in luck!
I was flipping through this month’s Instyle with Salma Hayek Pinault on the cover. Did you know that her husband is the chairman of PPR? That, readers, is the company that owns luxury fashion brands such as, Stella McCartney, Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent and other amazing fashion lines. I would die for a husband that came home every night with Gucci bags and Yves St. Laurent silk scarves. Anyway, I was flipping through the mag and I noticed they had done a piece on slender eye-catching bracelets. I thought to myself, the fashion gods have answered my prayers! They’ve made bracelets for people who have tiny wrists like me. I immediately fell in love with one particular diamond bracelet and thought to myself that I NEED to have this bracelet. This fantasy came to a screeching halt when I got a glimpse of the price. $7,430 dollars, yikes! The bracelet featured in the spread is 18k white gold with diamonds and it’s from jewelry designer Penny Preville. She makes beautiful pieces that can be found at Neiman Marcus. Celebrities like Sandra Bullock and Heidi Klum wear her pieces. It’s easy for someone like Heidi Klum to drop $7,000 on a bracelet but what about us? You know, the girls without the six figure salaries. I decided I was going to go on the hunt to find a similar piece that is still fab but with less 0’s!
1928 Art Deco Crystal Floral Motif Bracelet
I’m sure you guys know by now that 1928 has tons of pieces. Between the earrings and the necklaces, it’s hard to keep track. I have to admit that some pieces stand out more than the others and they become unforgettable. That’s the case with the Art Deco Crystal Floral Motif Bracelet. I love this bracelet! When I saw the Penny Preville bracelet I thought of our bracelet. They both have the round circular middle that sits on top of the wrist with adorned precious gems and more importantly, both have thin bands that can easily fit anybody’s wrist. The Preville design retails for $7,000 while our piece is only $24. Both bracelets ooze glamour, but our glamour fits in with everyone’s budget! Wear the bracelet in the daytime with jeans and blouse tops or in the evening with your cocktail dress. It’s versatile, timeless and great for any budget! Of course with our piece you don’t get the shiny diamonds but you get shiny crystals, and anything that sparkles is good enough for me!
Hey readers! Are any of you planning to watch Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time for Memorial Day weekend? (It comes out tomorrow.) The movie got me thinking about ancient Persian jewelry. But first, for those not familiar with the plot, Prince of Persia is an action fantasy adventure film that was adapted from a popular video game. Basically, Jake Gyllenhaal plays a prince named Dastan, who is on a heroic quest to protect a mystical dagger that can release the Sands of Time—a gift from the gods that can reverse time; and whoever possesses the dagger has the power to rule the world.
To all you non-pierced fashionistas! I know your struggles…You’re thinking, “Why does it have to be so darn hard to find nice clip on earrings?” And the ones that are abundantly available are many times poor quality or just too plain, if you ask me. Oprah is one celebrity who wore clip earrings until she got her ears pierced in 2005 (and on national TV):
“All my life, I have been an old-fashioned, clip-on-earring kind of person. I have worn the most expensive jewelry–all my life–and have only always had clips because I have been afraid to have my ears pierced,” she said.
Maybe you’re like Oprah before her procedure or maybe you just never got around to it. Or maybe your ears are too sensitive or you just want to keep it natural. Whatever the reason, you can still buy a pair of beautiful clip on earrings without the price Oprah paid. Just last month we took 25 of our best-selling earrings and converted them to clip! So that means the hunt is finally over! These fashionable clip earrings act as a perfect gift for friends or family who opted to go the painless route:)
Oh my dear readers – over 4MM Avatar DVD’s have been sold since the 4/23 release. That’s a lot of blue! Which, of course, I must translate to blue 1928 pieces – what fun!
"Avatar" photo courtesy of IMDB.com
For earrings, if I were a Navi I’d choose either the 1928 Mademoiselle Blue Flower earrings (most likely for day flying around Pandora) and the Starlight Tears Blue Hues for evening flying – the tiny crystal accents are just enough to catch that starlight and make my blue face SHINE!
Still purchasing, purchasing, purchasing for all the Mothers in my life – 1928 has an amazing selection of jewelry for whatever style your Mom rocks! Am also thinking of the upcoming grads I need to shop for; have one friend graduating Law School, another getting her MRS! Get it?!
Yes, I have a Bridal Shower to attend this weekend. It’s a Beach theme in Southern California – what else?! The happy couple is getting married in Malibu and doing beach colors for everything – DIVINE!
